Moon Architecture

Explore Moon Architecture WKS || Digital FUTURES || July 2021 || ABSTRACT || Setting up a lunar base camp is an integral part of future research and explorations of the Moon. Understanding its challenging environment is an indispensable part of the design process. Through our study, we investigate the potential of utilizing the lunar lava tubes as a feasible site for setting up a human ecology on the Moon. Our design traverses several optimization and analysis criteria as an integral part of designing a structure for astronaut settlements for up to 180 days.

While understanding that lunar construction is challenging, the proposed design presents a relatively easy modular framework system within an inflatable pressurized dome. Emphasis was laid on ease of assembly and providing a comfortable habitat for the 4 astronauts, with ample research opportunities within the lava tubes. Through this proposal, we also envision expansion strategies of the habitat through the lava tubes, as the need for further lunar research advances.
