MIT Media Lab Webinar
December 1st 2021 Lecturers || Prof. Joseph Paradiso, Prof. Valentina Sumini, Arch. Guillermo Trotti || Living in space. Talk by Prof. Julien de Wit (MIT EAPS) and Astronaut Paolo Nespoli (ESA) || Over the past two decades, human space exploration has made significant progress, particularly with the success of the International Space Station. This is in line with the NASA constitutive act's aim of exploring space for the benefit of all humanity. There is a significant phase of exploration and utilization of our nearest celestial body, the Moon, which is being studied under the ARTEMIS Program. The potential for one or more permanent settlements on the Moon is under development.
During these webinars, attendees discovered effective ways to tackle the challenge of designing for the Moon's permanent settlement by considering multiple areas of expertise across different research fields and exploring various strategies and solutions.
The realm of architecture in the space field is a nuanced and intricate amalgamation of various scientific disciplines that ultimately determine the quality of human life and well-being in outer space. This multifaceted field is supported by a network of interdependent pillars, including space sciences, engineering, robotics, industrial design, ergonomics, medicine, psychology, and art. Together, these pillars lay the foundation for creating habitable and sustainable environments beyond Earth's atmosphere.
